Solar Bins

Large waste bins with solar panels on top have started appearing in streets near us. Why does a bin need solar power? Or any power at all? One reason is so that it can send emails!

The bins have a solar PV module that powers an 8v battery. Just 8 hours of sunlight provides enough energy to power the bins for a whole month.

The energy is used to power an internal compactor which automatically compresses the waste. This gives the bins up to 8x the capacity of a standard street bin. Waste is deposited via a loading tray and there is no direct access to the inside of the bin. This also means that loose waste does not get blown into the street in windy weather.

An internal sensor monitors how full the bin is and when it needs emptying the bin sends an alert (by email or text) to the Council. The Council can access a map showing each bin's status. They can then schedule collections more efficiently and reduce lorry journeys and hence their carbon footprint.
