Hedgehog Highways

Hedgehogs are in trouble!

These shy, nocturnal animals eat slugs and snails and have long been thought of as the gardener's friend, but a recent survey found that their numbers have declined by a third in the last ten years and our gardens might be part of the problem.

Hedgehogs travel around a mile each night in search of food and a mate but our gardens are now so self-contained they severely limit a hedgehog's ability to roam. Imagine your garden from a hedgehog's perspective. Is there anywhere it could get in through your wall or fence? And even if it could get into your garden, what about the other gardens that connect to it? Without access to those if wouldn't be able to reach your's no matter how hedgehog friendly it is. Ideally whole streets need to get involved, but it has to start somewhere... why not with you!

A gap of 13cm x 13cm is ideal. You could remove a brick from the bottom of a wall, cut a hole in the bottom of a fence or dig a channel underneath your wall, fence or gate. DIY methods are on www.hedgehogstreet.org and they also raise funds by selling snazzy labels to mark your hedgehog highway. Hedgehog friendly gravel boards are sold by Jacksons Fencing and Jarrett Fencing.
